There's no universal definition of respect, usually a visitor respects another property or a person respects seniority, other countries may have customs, so in order to achieve a positive outcome, one may have to acquiesce to such formalities in order to build a relationship.
In a nightclub the doormen enforce respect, out on the streets respect again has a different definition.. I would say though, it is very difficult to show respect to those people who have a disrespectful message or manner, the internet for instance has enabled people to be passive aggressive and disrespectful, anonymity empowers the meek ones.
Personally I would gladly obey formalities when meeting a royal or head of state/politician, why not, it would be a pleasure, in fact Prospect, the uni jobsite is advertising a position working in the Royal household.
