Arhhh. I think it was definitely Thatcher. You can try and blame union leaders if you like, but they were trying to protect what was left of an industry that had been torn to bits.
Now there is an argument that this was in decline and no longer needed, as we could import cheap coal from China, but it's Thatchers legacy that has left many parts of the UK with generations of unemployment.
I'm not sure importing cheap coal would be considered a socialist policy btw. |
