The point is, we don't live in a truely socialist society today.. and neither do any UK politicians have completely socialist views.

I don't understand? Are you saying that neilios doesn't like socialism in general, the idea of socialism, any parts of socialism, anything that could be related to socialism???

A state run healthcare system is socialism..  so are you saying that neilios doesn't like the idea of the NHS because it is a socialist policy?

Arhhh. I think it was definitely Thatcher. You can try and blame union leaders if you like, but they were trying to protect what was left of an industry that had been torn to bits.

Now there is an argument that this was in decline and no longer needed, as we could import cheap coal from China, but it's Thatchers legacy that has left many parts of the UK with generations of unemployment.

I'm not sure importing cheap coal would be considered a socialist policy btw.

Strangely enough I'm from a town where the steelworks was closed in the 80s.

I don't blame the Tories. I blame labour for nationalising it in the first place. As an independent company it might have had a chance to specialise and survive.

As for coal.... Didn't the labour government before Thatcher close more mines? And I think it's "the market" and "climate change" that killed coal.
