Ahem yes it is about religion, otherwise why not just use first name if that is what you mean.
But as I've highlighted, how quickly you get to that stage surely depends on you, not on anyone else.
I mean it could go the other way. True story from a while back. I was in Bad Homburg meeting a member of my team. I was new in that team so I introduced me by my full name and added that most call me JP so feel free to do so as well. However that person responded to state that he prefers it when I address him as Herr Doctor Schmidt.
I have to admit, my brain was thinking fast and what shall I do. Shall I become on equal footing and utilise my full edition all title, shall I piss in the pot and use an army or hereditary title? On that occasion I decided to just be courteous and respond with Grusgott Herr Doctor Schmidt, very nice to meet you. Within the hour I knew his first name was Hans and was invited to enjoy dinner with him and his family.
I just fail to see how anyone can offend by being courteous, polite and appropriate in the situation. |
