But we’ve seen WMR below £199 and that never went mass market. It only has 10% on Steam Survey. It’s like Oculus have stopped chasing the 48% market share they have now and went for the 10% market with a PC resolution LESS than a stand alone resolution. It’s as if they want this to fail.

PCVR is now at Pimax 5k levels or at HP Reverbs 2k per eye. Cosmos will likely be 2k per eye too. Qualcomm Reference design is 2k per eye.

I am still in shock. Oculus pulling the Rift from sale completely. This is self destruction.

Even Oculus are just calling it 'incremental' and 'not revolutionary'.

You must be easily shocked.

It's just a mid term rejig and isn't worth the discussion.

It might have good visuals, it might have good tracking. It might prove popular.

It might not.

Oculus probably did a bit of research on this thing. They probably don't think they're hitting the self destruct button.

If this is not Rift 2 why are Oculus already scrapping the Rift? It beggars belief.

Presuming Ed Publish time 2-12-2019 05:38:26

It's an incremental upgrade.

If a full new product came out, it would be at a higher price, and existing users would be encouraged to bin their old Rift and replace it with this one.

I don't think that's what's happening here.

I think this product is mainly aimed at new users. Existing Rift users will more than likely wait for the 'next big thing'.

It's just the Rift with different internals. There'd be no point in continuing the Rift, they're the same level of product aimed at the same level of consumer.

Its like when Apple brought out the 6, 6s, 7, 7s, 8, 8s.
The 's' was just a version of the last one, but with some decent changes.
They still brought out another updated version, and I think Oculus will do the same.

Windows crippled their own VR sales by confusing consumers by trying to be clever and rebrand everything as WMR. Should of just called it ZuneVR to begin with. lol

I take it RiftS has hit main stream media. Two colleagues have brought it up in conversation this morning. The basic response has been positive. Seems the main selling point being not having sensors stuck to the walls

Atmos Publish time 2-12-2019 05:38:28

If Rift S is not Rift 2 and Oculus now discontinued the Rift then technically Oculus has abandoned PCVR.

And let’s get this straight Oculus are not even building the Rift S is a Lenovo manufactured HMD like Samsung built the GearVR.

It could be Lenovo has the last word on price which is the real reason why it’s priced at £399 because now we have two companies taking a slice of the profit unless Oculus forfeit an profit at all and want to rely on game sales only.

Oculus have basically pulled out of PCVR and are building games for Quest which can also be scaled to PC on the cheap.

It’s a dark dark time for Oculus PCVR.

lol Its going to sell poop loads. Its not really aimed at us. But to be honest I`ve been thinking about a WMR headset for my laptop, so I might consider this as well.

Atmos Publish time 2-12-2019 05:38:29

Are they going to sell loads though? Rifters aren’t going to buy it. People who didn’t buy the Rift bought WMR and they are only a minority 10%.

Is Samsung not going to release a Odyssey2 with more cameras? Are people going to ignore the Cosmos? Are people going to ignore the HP Reverb? We haven’t even got to Valve yet. Pimax will come on strong later this year.

It’s going to be interesting how Steam Hardware Survey categorises the Rift S because technically it’s Lenovo headset. With no Rift sales market share is going to shift a lot over the next 6 months.

huxley Publish time 2-12-2019 05:38:29

Yup gonna sell lots. It’s backed by Facebook. It’s going to outsell wmr and the htc cosmos. It’s going to bring more people into VR at a base level and then the next step will be rift 2 or whatever is going to be called, once the rift s users are a bit more tech savvy.

That’s my prediction.

Let’s be honest. If the rift s was 8k with 200 degree fov, wireless and ran on a pocket calculator you would still hate it.

Move on and let the chips fall where they may.
