I don't think it matters what they show off at the moment. Infinity Ward are just about to show off the Oculus game they have been working on for the last couple of years.
Knuckles are still in short supply and the whole Index kit isn’t available in all countries yet.
Maybe the game needs more polish. Maybe SteamVR is about to get a major update in October.
Maybe when all three align and Valve feel the day has come they will just release it on Steam without warning.

I think this could be a good point. Good marketing to ride off the free publicity of another press conference. And lets be honest what ever this Valve game is it will support Rift users. Valve aren't a charity and most certainly wont stop over 50% of the current VR users on steam from playing said game.
