I would add that spending £50-£80 on a good professional set up (not a shop set up), will make almost any half decent guitar play well across the whole fret board. This will include fret levelling, (often needed on even expensive guitars) intonation and a good set up, with new strings. Of course you can do it yourself, but it takes time (and equipment) to know what you are doing. I take my guitars to a guy in Manchester who can make any guitar play better than when new. You can't make a terrible guitar play well, but you can certainly turn an Epiphone or equivalent into a great playing guitar. The difference set up makes is huge. I use this guy:

Phil Hartley Guitar Repairs - Home

I had him install a funky nut on my Ibanez AM103BM. Cost was £200 including full set up, fret dressing etc. Not cheap, but the guitar plays (not sounds, mind you...) as well as any well set up Gibson. I won't recoup the cost if I sell it, but I won't be doing that... The main problem with guitars is forming an 'emotional' attachment to them. As I have with my Ibanez. I'd be better off buying a good S/H Gibson 339, and getting it set up properly. The pictures are from a recent ebay auction when I was wanting to sell the guitar. Then I thought - why? I love it!

edit - you will see if you look closely at the nut picture, that Phil has shaved a little off the fret board length. This is because it was 1 mm or so too long. You really need the proper equipment and know what you are doing to get to that level of expertise.

I wouldn't touch this. There are reasons why they are being sold for 20% of the original price!Peavey is going out of business and this is a complex guitar that won't be supported any more.I'd say it's OK for someone who know what they're doing and just fancies picking up a cheap guitar to fiddle with and won't really care if it doesn't work, but not as the only guitar for a new player.

I'd spend a bit more and get it well set up. No musician would buy a self tuning guitar, it's easy to tune a guitar!

They will be buying them in their hoards next year. data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

Google the Gibson 2015 range.

Oops! Well, who'd have thought it...Don't think that anyone will be selling their 59 Les Pauls to buy one of these though.

Yeah, it's a great finish. It wasn't the greatest player when I bought it. But now...... It plays wonderfully. I was trying to sell it on ebay. Then my brain kicked in and I said 'why'? It's a great guitar. I'll never sell it. Probably...
By the way, the picture doesn't do it justice. The only plastic on the guitar is the pick up switch. The binding is also maple. The pick up surrounds are rosewood. Ibanez don't make guitars like that anymore. I believe that there are less than 30 of these worldwide. It's a 339 size. There are more of the 335 size (Ibanez AS103BM). But not many more. The BM stands for Burr Maple (thewood used).
