I would add that spending £50-£80 on a good professional set up (not a shop set up), will make almost any half decent guitar play well across the whole fret board. This will include fret levelling, (often needed on even expensive guitars) intonation and a good set up, with new strings. Of course you can do it yourself, but it takes time (and equipment) to know what you are doing. I take my guitars to a guy in Manchester who can make any guitar play better than when new. You can't make a terrible guitar play well, but you can certainly turn an Epiphone or equivalent into a great playing guitar. The difference set up makes is huge. I use this guy:
Phil Hartley Guitar Repairs - Home
I had him install a funky nut on my Ibanez AM103BM. Cost was £200 including full set up, fret dressing etc. Not cheap, but the guitar plays (not sounds, mind you...) as well as any well set up Gibson. I won't recoup the cost if I sell it, but I won't be doing that... The main problem with guitars is forming an 'emotional' attachment to them. As I have with my Ibanez. I'd be better off buying a good S/H Gibson 339, and getting it set up properly. The pictures are from a recent ebay auction when I was wanting to sell the guitar. Then I thought - why? I love it!
edit - you will see if you look closely at the nut picture, that Phil has shaved a little off the fret board length. This is because it was 1 mm or so too long. You really need the proper equipment and know what you are doing to get to that level of expertise.
