So Germany will happily cover the £10bn shortfall, just like that? The Germans are already becoming increasingly Eurosceptic. That will make things far worse for the election chances of Merkel or other pro EU politicians.
GEREXIT? Merkel in MELTDOWN as nearly HALF of Germans want EU referendum, poll finds
And let's not forget in that useful post earlier - Germany exports almost £25bn more to us than we do to them. WTO rules will hurt them. Especially in some of their important sectors such as motor manufacturing where a fifth of their exports go to the UK.
As for Germany forcing a budget... you think the other memberstates will happily accept £10bn of cuts to the various handouts they enjoy? And there will be no impact to enthusiasm for the EU?
If the UK dug its heels in and refused to negotiate an exit deal without a trade deal, this would potentially do EU harmony a great deal of harm. Especially if it is seen that Germany has to force through budget cuts - euroscepticism would be greatly boosted thru the rest of the EU.
It would leave the leaders of EU countries in the unenviable position of having to defend contribution rises / budget cuts AND the economic harm they will face from WTO rules
But as I've explained above, economics has a direct tie to the stability of the EU.
We have some powerful cards to play, especially around an exit deal. I think we need to make the most of this. |
