You could make the same argument about driving 85 on a motorway.  It was clear, no other cars, good visibility, my car can do 155mph.  You’re still going to get a speeding ticket because the limit is 70.

I agree on the policing. But something not controlled by the EU is our police budget which the Tories keep decimating.

"School, 20 when lights show”. This means a speed limit of 20 mph is advisory. Drivers are still permitted by law to drive above 20 mph, however the flashing signs advise 20 mph.

Indeed. No problem with a 20mph zone outside schools, but why not variable, like on motorways?

Do we really need a 20mph zone outside a school at 2 in the morning?

And as above, 99% of the time, I drive around 60. I'm not a driver that races round everywhere.

Do the maths, it tends to only shave off a few minutes by going faster. It's not worth it.

As you can see, unless you're going on a really long car trip, the time savings for speeding are already pretty minimal. The most time saved on a trip shorter than 500 miles is about 12 minutes (Trip G above). However, that's on a trip that's already an hour long. Factor in traffic lights and congestion (which we'll get to in a bit) and those savings can disappear quickly.

My issue is of things being brought in by the EU and not having sufficient say over it.

Ok, so the issue is specifically because the EU have proposed it rather than the implementation itself.  If the U.K. Government proposed it, without any referendum around it, would you be equally frustrated by it?  I get the usual argument that we can vote them out etc but you’ve said yourself, out FPTP system is skewed to favour the two largest parties, what if they both propose the same thing (eg Leaving the EU), how do you rationalise that?

That’s true but I know the road that my daughters school is on is permanent 20mph with speed bumps.  I wonder why there isn’t a standard?

Speed bumps aren't any better. They also slow down emergency vehicles. Then they started making gaps in them so ambulances, being wider wouldn't be affected.

It also means parents getting 4x4s became more attractive as they are also wider.

Yep. I wrote to my MP last week. I don't just post on here. You can do far more in the wider world if you are bothered by it. Posts on here change nothing. A handwritten letter I think does. She replied so at least it was read.
Labour scrapped the road fund license after a backlash. I think there's around 10 million drivers. 10 million voters.

So you are angry that the EU/UK Government wants to reduce the number of deaths caused by excess speed ? You are grumbling about a consequence of advances in technology. We will at some point reach a day when cars drive themselves without the need for any human input at a user level other than to select a destination. Which won't be mandated by the EU, you'll find that development in AI will cause a revolution in transport, which we last saw with the invention of the steam engine and internal combustion engine. Which is some decades away, but the trajectory is set. It will probably get a major speed increase development wise once quantum computing comes of age.


As a memberstate we have a veto. What we don't have control over is how our elected Politicians have used or not used that veto.

They had influence over Government Policy and wasted it. It's a bit of a moot question given MP's have taken control of the Commons Order papers.
