Iain Banks culture novels are something else!
Excession is my favourite. Coincidentaly I noticed a post earlier, in another AVF General thread from Ethics Gradient...... Couldn't be? Could it? You'd think a GSV would have more pressing matters to attend to.

If he ever finishes it

Have you read any Abercrombie, Lynch or Hobb?

I've only read Consider Phlebas and I struggled with it - his writing is good but at the same time I found it a little lazy.  I have The Player of Games on my shelf too, not read it yet though.

Definately agree with you there.  Not yet read any of his Sharpe books, but currently enjoying 'The Last Kingdom' (book 1 in the Viking series), and previously thoroughly enjoyed his Grail Quest and Arthur series.

I find him a bit hit and miss, but generally a good read.

I'm just about to start reading:
"The Cosmic Landscape- String Theory and the Illusion of Intelligent Design" by Leonard Susskind

Have been having a bit of a break from the usual horror/fiction books that I read and have been re-reading some physics books and finding new ones.

As I have never read Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi I plan to read that soon too, my "must read" list is always getting bigger, never smaller, especially with threads like this about.

I've been sorting through some books, which to keep (all), which to go (none ) etc, and came across one I bought a few years ago, but somehow missed reading.

Flashman and the Dragon, by George MacDonal Fraser.

I think a re-read of the series is in order!

Currently, The Assault by Harry Mulisch, excellent novel with a WWII theme, highly recommended.

Next on my list is Willem Elsschot's Villa des Roses, based on the authors personal experience living in a Paris boarding house.  Not sure if it is the kind of book I would normally enjoy but comes highly recommended.

Trying to remember is that the one with the black sphere thing and the rogue culture section?

I think Phlebas was one of the very early ones (maybe even the first). Player of Games is a great one I remember really enjoying it.
Although if you fancy a challenge try "Feersum Enjinn", not a Culture one but a very interesting read (once you get used to it!).

I'd be very dissapointed if he doesn't!

Have you tried the Steven Erikson Malazan books, also think they are fantastic in their scope.

Think I read the Assasin ones from Hobb a few years ago seemed quite good but can't really remember. What have Abercrombie & fitch (Lynch) written.

You should try to give the Sharpe ones a read, they are great adventure stories.
