So it's a base station headset? that sucks, I want completely physical tether free!

Atmos Publish time 2-12-2019 05:15:46

It could be both but nobody knows. To be both Knuckles would have to have LED emitters built in so they could be tracked buy the inbuilt cameras. Not out of the realm of possibility if WMR can do it cheap.

If Knuckles did have LED emitters built in then they would be compatible with all WMR headsets. That would make sense as Valve would make more Knuckles sales and not Alienate WMR players that use SteamVR.

Could they work with Rift as well then. Valve are going to want to be able to sell these to as many people as possible after all.

I can't see the Knuckles controllers having both LEDs and light sensors. There won't be enough room on the things lol

It's more likely that they will only support Lighthouse tracking imo, despite HTC abandoning the tracking system for the Vive Cosmos.

Whilst in an ideal world that would be cool would it not make them pretty thirsty when it came to battery life?

Lighthouse tracking, cameras are just for pass through video. I'm absolutely sure of it.

HTC abandoned lighthouse cause they'd also heard the rumours of a Valve produced headset. They wouldn't want to be dependent on a competitor. They're also pushing their own store pretty hard!

Very much this!

HTC are probably also pissed off by paying a licence fee for every Vive or Vive Pro they sell.

Atmos Publish time 2-12-2019 05:15:52

I hope Valve use Micro OLEDs and not LCD. Its one of the few things I don't like about the Pimax.

thesnowdog Publish time 2-12-2019 05:15:53

It all comes down to cost at the end of the day, it's in Valve's interest to have this headset selling for as cheap a price as possible because they've been losing customers since the Rift was first released and even more since HTC set up VivePort.

I don't have problems with them using LCD displays as long as they're DECENT LCD displays.
