What type of doorbell sounder do you have. It states in the instructions that if it's a digital one then you need to connect the supplied diode across the button connections. Could this be the problem?

If your still getting a battery level indicator on the app when hardwired then the circuit you are testing it on mustn't have power. This is how it shows when connected to power.

Because you've already activated it via motion so the first press does nothing (as designed). When you press it again however, you're activating it via the button and not motion.
An observation from reading your posts here; there are a number of users coming up with theories that may explain your predicament and also suggesting tests to prove these which you're summarily dismissing them off hand. It may be worth considering these suggestions as they might actually solve your issue...

I fail to see what Homekit could offer for it. Isn't Homekit about controlling devices. You don't need to control a doorbell.
After the 'support' call with Ring, I did a little thinking. It occurred to me that I have a DECT phone sitting right next to my broadband gateway, which the doorbell connects to. I've read in the past about how certain devices that emit radio waves can cause issues with WiFi and broadband in general. I have an analogue phone I use for line testing so disconnected the DECT phone completely and installed the analogue phone. The doorbell seems to be behaving quite differently. It seems to be able to reconnect when activated now and has done for a week and the way it functions seems to tie in with it using a low bandwidth connection (Chime activation and notification receiving delayed by a few seconds). So if it continues to behave like this, I'll finally be happy with it as it's what I'd expect with my broadband.
My cabinet should be fibre enabled by the end of November. At that point the doorbell should have the upload bandwidth it requires to work properly.

If this is how it's designed to work, I shouldn't have bought it, as it seems a pretty huge design flaw, surely?
No-one should be able to get to the door without triggering the motion detection.With the above, this would mean the doorbell would never ring?How can that be a good idea?
I want motion detection, but I don't want notifications on my phone of them as I'd be getting notified of passers by all day long.I only want notifications of someone ringing then doorbell.
I'm not dismissing all suggestions, I like the DECT phone one for example, so will try that when I get home.The others I believe people haven't perhaps understood my issue. As I said (for example) the device I have the app installed on cannot be a factor as it's independent to the doorbell ringing (and I've had the app installed on 4 or 5 different devices already).

If you answer the motion detection the the ring notification won't come through as you are already in communication with the device. If you don't answer the motion alert then the ring alert will come through after a button press.
Motion notifications can be switched off in the app so you only receive ring alerts. It's fairly straight forward. It will still record motion alerts if you have cloud recording.
