Thanks for your thoughts, just need to find some locks that i could open via my phone/ipad/tablet and i can give it all a whirl!

I'd be interested to hear how you get on source 'smart' locks as that's something I'd consider too.
We have a PIR controlled light in the porch that is ripe for being replaced with a Philips Hue or similar 'smart' bulb the doorbell can trigger. It'll certainly look much tidier.

Just checking the videos on my phone here at work on the WiFi network and the video seems to take just as long to open here even though it's streaming it from Ring's cloud storage. I should add that I'm not sure of the latency of the network here.

I'll post up some of the videos later so you get a flavour of how it picks up movement and the video quality.

Looks like theKwikset Kevo is what i need:

Amazon.com doesn't ship to UK though, so will have to get it shipped on (no biggie) it also says further down it works with RING..so should be good.

Don't move for a month and it will be a while before i set it all up, but seems to be what i need..

List of "smart" locks etc here :

I have the original Ring and I pre-ordered the Ring Pro back in March with a Ring Chime bell from the US (got slapped with a £45 VAT fee as well :-( i have spent almost £450 with Ring. The Ring is ALMOST the best product I have purchased its like caller ID for the front door. I installed the original back in April and since then the doorbell has saved me a few times it has also shown a virgin engineer splitting my cable feed with my neighbour and lots more I have not missed a delivery. Now for the bad bits if you order the pro your going to have to pay £45 vat and there is also an issue with the pro working correctly with UK/EU doorbell power supplies you have to disable your original bell. youngsyp the pro does not use PoE it uses your existing mains powered door bell wiring. The biggest problem by far is WiFi dropout i have purchased a new AP and placed it 1 meter away but for some reason the original ring bell keeps dropping the connection so i have to reboot the AP daily. I would give the original and pro 4/10 they need to make a wired version.

I have been looking at getting a Pro andI have a couple of questions you might be able to help with.

1. Is the Pro available in the to purchase in the UK ?
2. Am I right in thinking if you want to use the pro in the UK you have to buy the Chime as well as your existing chime will no longer function ?

youngsyp Publish time 1-12-2019 21:09:34

That's by design. In its 'normal' state, the Ring is essentially hibernating with just the motion detector active (if enabled). It shuts off the WiFi transceiver to reduce battery drain meaning WiFi connectivity drops. So when motion is detected or the button is pressed, it needs to wake up, re-connect to the WiFi network and send the video, audio and notification data. It's the products achilles heal unfortunately.
My hope was that by connecting it to a power supply, it would always be 'awake' as it would have no need to power save. that doesn't seem to be the case from your experience though.

ETA: I sent my first Doorbell back as it kept 'locking up' and needed resetting after a day. The new one is working perfectly though.
I had a bit of a moment with the Chime but that turned out to be my router playing silly beggars with the guest WLAN I'd set up for the Ring devices. I've now scrapped that and they connect to the general WLAN.
I've also been learning about bufferbloat on xDSL connections and tuning that seems to have improved performance a little. It still doesn't have the upload bandwidth it really needs though.
And it looks like I completely made up where I stated the Pro uses ethernet. It doesn't but does allow connection over the 5GHz band.

m11rphy - I pre-ordered the pro from the US site as soon as it announced thats why to got slapped with the £45 vat. You are NOT able to use your existing chime which is a bit of a shame this is because Ring say UK/EU transformers only supply 8VAC and not 16-24 VAC as required by the pro so Ring gave me a free chime. during setup Ring say you NEED to select no doorbell to bypass the original chime.

youngsyp thanks for the info I think my original one is a little dodgy as it refuses to connect to wifi after someone presses the button so im going to call Amazon to swap it over. you right I have connected my pro to AC (5Ghz).

The theory behind this is amazing. Precisely what I'm after. But it does sound like it needs some refinement to make it work like I imagined..... perhaps Apple need to get hold of this!data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7
