While everyone waits, here's how we used to travel from planet to planet!

I think this will be well received on PS4 because Sony's marketing seems it would even work to sell a can of poo. People have been so hyped about this, they will take it as the second coming no matter what it ends up being. On PC my guess is people might find better alternatives.
I've never understood the hype around it myself and now that it's out there I still don't get it.

The hype comes from the promise offered to explore a galaxy, travelling from planet to planet, encountering the unknown, something that several games are trying to capitalize on, for example Elite Dangerous and the biggest crowd funded game ever, Star Citizen, plus countless others.I imagine a lot of people (myself included) would love to play in a sci-fi sandbox on that kind of scale that offers some level of immersion.Plus the procedural tech on show with No Man's Sky was/is very impressive, however the continued delays and the fact that it appeared clear that all they had was a tech demo which they've now shoehorned a game on to, wore thin.

However, for games like Elite Dangerous (and potentially Star Citizen), the target they are aiming for is incredibly ambitious and I imagine that Elite at least will take quite a step forward later this year when they allow for multi-crewed ships, as at present the game can feel a little solitary. It still offers differing roles to play, such as mining, smuggling, trading, exploration, pirating, bounty hunting .. there are lots of different avenues that would appeal to any Star Wars or Trekkie fan, but if you are not interested in that kind of game or genre, I doubt you'll ever get the hype that surrounds titles like these.

See, getting hyped for this I understand but nothing about NMS ever suggested it would be that kind of game. It always felt to me like Google Earth on a bigger scale.

I am not suggesting that No Man's Sky promised all of those different aspects, but it is a sci-fi sandbox in a similar vein, so anybody with an marked interest in Elite Dangerous / Star Citizen (and those type of titles) I would also imagine would look forward to something like this too. After seeing the first footage of the game, it looked to me like the player would explore a galaxy, get into combat, fight for resources etc., and it certainly seemed to offer a huge sense of scale.Watch the first two minutes of this video, this was the very first footage of the game shown back in 2014 I think.

Personally, I didn't get a Google Earth vibe data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

Having watched some streams of this, my hype meter has reduced somewhat. It could just be the way the person was playing, but all they seemed to do for 20 minutes was gather stuff on a planet, fly up to another planet (via a long loading screen - think Elite hyperspace) and rinse/repeat.Occasionally they would do stuff with the items they gathered, or do some combat, which looked very Elite like, but not as exciting.Considering they are touting hundreds of hours of gameplay, it could look very boring after 5 hours.

I think as a tech demo, this will be very impressive. But as a game, I'm not too sure.

I'd like to see what the PC version at least looks like compared to the PS4 version (which is OK, but not exactly blowing my socks off). So far I've seen no PC footage whatsoever - it's all just rehashed PS4 trailer and demo footage, which makes me a tad worried (and hopeful at the same time...).

It started as an indie game so I never expected them to create something revolutionary. It most likely became a full game only because of the hype, so why not make more money out of it if people are gonna buy it anyway?
Streams looked alright but quite samey overall which doesn't matter at this point anyway because it could be a turd it would still sell.

There are no review copies either........

Only differences I imagine will be resolution, anti-alias and procedural distance draw settings. They have gone for a very stylised 70's sci-fi art style (check out John Harris' work) and probably because it is easier to procedurally generate.
