Or get another job that's only 12hours and use the extra hour to cook, you will save more than you earn in that hour by not buying processed cr*p and feel a lot better for it!!

I doubt it as the question was how much do you spend on household goods and food. I wouldn't think many people are factoring in petrol, wear on tyres, tax and insurance in to the equation too.

About 50 a week for 2 adults and a toddler. And that's eating well. I'd struggle to spend much more and eat it while still fresh.

Fruit and veg from grocers £15
Meat from butchers £20
Milk and eggs from milkman £5

Then nappies and bit and bobs probably about £20 from the local co op or tescos desperately trying to wean the mrs off going to the supermarkets but it's really hard...It's the only thing we bicker about...

Everything is cooked from scratch, I enjoy it, I just pop my headphones on and listen to the weeks new music or the mrs cooks and outs the radio on...

So family of 4 consisting of 2 adults a baby and a toddler about £60 a week, some weeks lower some weeks a little higher if we buy some alcohol...

I'm slightly shocked by those that say they are only spending £25 per person per week.

Not saying it can't be done, but I can only imagine that it must be bulking out on staples.

I would say that my shopping is slightly indulgent. We don't drink much and we don't eat out or get take-away meals that often. We try and buy the 'deals' and go for cheap brands where the difference quality is not important or perceivable. But we buy plenty of fresh fruit, veg salad - that stuff isn't cheap and I reckon that alone accounts for £25 (total not per person) per week at least. We do buy moderate quality and luxury otherwise - we certainly don't go without.

But I couldn't get anywhere close to £25 without a massive change in habit.Just simple meal whilst at work, or school dinners for my children amounts to something like £15 per week each.

How many have accounted for take away food, meals out, pub trips, snacks whilst out and about.

If anything I reckon my £50 estimate is on the low side.

Cheers,

Nigel

Indeed.Someone said £20 - that's an average of under £1 per meal overall - would be interesting to see how that's done.

I realised I forgot to include the butchers in our spend, which is probaly £50 a month, so takes us to £850 ish a month for a family of six.

We have toast for breakfast. I don't have lunch on work days, the missus has a salad and fruit. Evening meals are all cooking from fresh. So no scrimping. Its easily done. 2 year old has 3 meals at nursery on week days so only has a snack in evening or a bit of our tea. Can easily do that on 50 quid a week.

Our fish and meat is from supermarket however.

We will probably have a take away at a weekend or lunch out however.

It's funny how people who spend a certain amount can't understand how anyone could live on anything less.
For us, it's all down to proper organising and planning the weekly shop in accordance with a set menu that my wife does every week before getting the groceries.
Below was our "menu" for last week. Bear in mind that I normally work away from home from Monday-Thursday at least 2 weeks per month, so that leaves my wife and 3 children. Also bear in mind that my wife eats like a budgie data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

Mon: Potatoes, beans, sausages and gravy
Tues: Homemade lasagne, homemade garlic bread, salad.
Weds: Pizza/Nuggets with Chips
Thurs: Potatoes, veg, peppered chicken/pork
Fri: Homemade fish pie, potatoes/chips
Sat: Mini fry-up for lunch, Homemade burgers in baps with salad in the evening
Sun: Sunday Roast, homemade Thai Green curry in the evening.

The above obviously does not include lunches or snacks.

We were never this strict before on our spending, but we wasted so much money and food by not being organised.

I was thinking of someone else actually but you'll do data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

So like this:

"Mon: Potatoes, beans, sausages and gravy"

One portion of that including sausages costsIt's funny how people who spend a certain amount can't understand how anyone could live on anything less.

Just to be clear on this accusation, it's not that I don't 'understand' - I'd just like to see how it's done data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7
