The card on the front and back windows has the badge number of the driver, so you can take that down from the outside. I may not be following you correctly but if you have been raped or assorted in a black cab you would be inside it more than likely and as stated the ID number is clearly visible. But I agree it would be more handy to have that information on your phone. But more and more people are using black cab apps that offered the same info.

And when they do they don’t use a black cab they use a private hire. Ergo how is that different than Uber? Or Addison Lee etc.

I think I've shown there is a reasonable level of track and trace within a black cab

Jezza99 Publish time 26-11-2019 01:40:29

Not when you hail one as a black cab, isn’t that the point? If you don’t hail one but prebook one then it isn’t a black cab.

So we have to agree to disagree, but you have no tracking at all of your journey in a black cab.

Also, many women feel much safer with Uber, because they don't have to walk the streets at night trying to find a black cab to hail, they can order an Uber right to their location, and even know the drivers name.

Don't forget that black cabs do not have to stop and pick someone up, and some will openly admit that they will not pick up people of certain ethnicities after dark.

Ha ha ha. Meanwhile, back in the real world......

Cab drivers fined after refusing fares because the destinations were too close

Trust me, I know some cabbies very well. They can be very choosy about who they pick up. Plus if/when a cab fails to stop, what are you going to do about it?

You can always find exceptions to the rule

So in other words, black cab drivers don't have to pick you up then. If you don't believe me, go out at night dressed scruffily with a couple of equally scruffy mates, act pissed and try to hail a black cab. See how many will stop for you.

Good luck with that.

Fully agreed, there are always exceptions and edge cases. Hence I haven’t stepped down to the level of linking to actual convicted black Taxi cab rapists etc. The checks are always about a moment in time and what was known and available to the DBS at that moment in time. They are never a guarantee that nothing will happen in the future.

Likewise The Knowledge seems overrrated as well. Thursday evening a week ago I did hail a Taxi on the streets as I had only 1% phone battery left. I had to find a cashpoint first to make certain I can pay in case they didn’t accept card or put a charge on top. Then told them the name of my hotel. He was like is that on Tinworth street. Now I know the area and was able to tell him yeah just around the corner. But if I didn’t I would have said no because it is actually on Vauxhall’s Walk. Then he went on to reaffirm once more, so next to NCIS. Again I knew the history so responded yes, next to the NCA known as SOCA after NCIS. I mean how is anyone out of town supposed to have such local knowledge? To argue with a cockney, understand him whilst drunk and know the area.

I know I couldn’t do that in say Glasgow or Bristol, let alone Paris, Warsaw or Moscow.

It is so much easier to just enter the address, know when your ride arrives, what vehicle it is, who is driving, be given nice cold bottled water, and get out of the door.

Well if your Phone is charged data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

Another great experience when arriving at Moscow airport. Your greeted by lots of hustlers who want you to get in their car. Simply use the app; choose what level car you want branded, eco, standard, large, luxury. I choose luxury last time and a nice Mercedes GLS appears just like that data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

I think there is room for both on the market. And in fact the cabbie down my road has his black cab but also three cars he hires out to uber drivers. Clever chap.
