You should try Uber - much cheaper than black cabs, and they even go south of the river should you have such a odd desire.

Inclined to agree on that.
If the mayor was concerned about about a particular aspect of Uber or their drivers, he could have tightened up on the regulation, rather than a straight ban.

I don't think the mayor has a position on the Board of Transport for London, whose decision it was, so why is he getting the stick for it?Clearly he support s the decision, but that doesn't mean he influenced it.As suggessted it seems more likely this was influenced by the black cabs lobby.

I've heard criticism of uber along the lines of, "great they are cheap, no good if you are disabled."

The more people use uber, the more black cabs go under. A black cab is set up of wheelchairs, disabled access.

Technically it was TFL that banned them.
- Although the Mayor seems to be the one explaining and defending the decision.

The Times are blaming him directly:

Mayor’s decision on Uber triggers political storm

I suppose it serves as a hash lesson in the growing reliance of insecure employment and the need for a regulator, still hopefully for those Uber drivers who have commercial leases or loans to enable them to work a competitor will soon fill Ubers void.

I only started using Uber when I visited London last winter. I must admit, I enjoyed what the tech offered and of course the prices seemed to be very attractive.

The drivers were interesting, especially the one who had come from abroad for a month, rented a room and rented a Prius.

Many of my black cab driving mates, despised the existence of Uber and i can understand why.

It will be very interesting to see what happens.

Uber are going nowhere. They are taking this to court, and will take it all the way.
