It's a good old fashioned test though for a low power engine:
Park up.
Engage handbrake.
Engage 4th gear.
Drive off...
1) you drive off: the hand brake is rubbish
2) The car stays still and you smell a horrible smell, clutch is rubbish.
3) Car stalls, both are good...
Sounds like you need to let someone(garage)look at it.
Did this today, car stalled, so that's fine.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but as its about the same car i thought it would be beter here.
I was wondering if anyone would know if this particular focus has a timing belt or chain?
The engine is
1.8L Duratec HE PFI (125/130PS), petrol,but , i dont know what i am looking for so cant tell either way.
Can anyone help ?

Welldoes still crunch a bit in reverse if you don't wait a couple of seconds before engaging it .
Hand break us fine though.
