If someone crashed into you, you can hire a car and send the bill to their insurance company. This is what i did.

With some insurance companies yes, others, no.
It's pretty ridiculous that an insurance company would send a £500 car into a garage to be estimated to see if it's repairable.
As others have said, even a small amount of work would render it a total loss.

That also depends on your T&C's, but here the OP is at fault, so not relevant.

Hi all,
So the insurance company has valued the car at £500
They are giving me £250 (the price less my excess) and letting me keep the car!
I have someone interested in buying the car for spares.
Should i cancel my road tax on it as soon as possible?
What should i do about my exciting policy ?
If i am selling the car and dont have another vehicle yet will they freeze it? it does not run out until November.
Thanks.

Good news they have let you have the car, and not deducted any salvage value from you.
You can go ahead and cancel your road tax (if the car is now off the road IE driveway) and can your insurance. You may find you have a fee for cancellation, ususally admin fee multiplied by remaining months on the policy. If you've paid upfront, you'll get the residual back after fees. If it's pro rota, it'll be the fees you pay.
Don't bother freezing it just cancel it, and reinsure a new vehicle when you get one. Last thing you want is to still insure the car, and the new buyer be involed in an incident and you're still on for it!.

I would just transfer your insurance over to your new car assuming the transfer fees will be cheaper than the cancellation fees.

Do some policies automatically end at the point the covered vehicle is declared total-loss?
I'm sure I once went to change my policy over to the replacement car and discovered it had been cancelled, a new 12m policy needed.

When my car was declared CAT C by Admiral, my insurance was cancelled on the spot.
