Depends on the insurance company. Aviva, Directline etc all still cover it, and for new buisiness then often want to see proof of repairs).
Is it drivable?
If the new owner wants to move it then cancelling the car tax might be inconvenient for them and you?
Technically when you sell the vehicle then the tax goes but there is a lag between doing the change of ownership paperwork and the systems that store the data.
If they're just moving it from one place to another it being taxed will prevent a fixed penalty from a static camera coming to you as the registered keeper.
If it's undriveable and they're towing it then it doesn't matter.
You only get tax refunded in whole months so I would look into declaring it SORN and getting a refund organised in the next week so you get August's back.
My understanding is once the car is written off then the policy lapses immediately.Otherwise there would be nothing to stop a further claim against them on the car if it rolled into another vehicle, caught fire and caused damage etc.Check with the insurer but I think you'll be back looking at a new policy on whatever you buy next.
With the new system, a buyer can tax a car instantly, so the OP should not have any concerns over cancelling the tax.
I meant if the buyer is breaking for parts - they won't pay 6 months tax and then recover 5 months a few days later for the sake of a trip home.If the vehicle is declared SORN then snapped on a camera the OP might end up with a fine?
My understanding is you don't get back anything for the remainder of July but should make sure you've dealt with it before August begins regardless.
If it's going off on a trailer it's academic anyway.

^^^ You can SORN it online right upto (almost) midnight on the last day of the month, and receive refund for the next and subsequent months, so no reason to do it before then, any change of ownership submitted to DVLA automatically ends the previous keeper's tax and transfers liability to the new keeper (and de-SORNs, which the new keeper must see to)), though if that happens on/after the 1st of next month both keepers will pay tax for that month.

Did all the change of owner ship on the DVLA website , and then notified my insurance people who have put a note on the system that i no longer have the car.
Will be looking at purchasing another vehicle within the next week or so. If anyone is interested i will put up what i get on here just to bring the thread to a close.

So looking at this tomorrow as a big upgrade from the previous car.
Only an admin fee to pay to transfer insurance over untill end of November.
Anything I should look out for when checking it over?

At that price and age you're buying on condition as much as anything else - check the history to be sure there are no big gaps.
Make sure everything works - esp. things like the aircon which will be expensive to fix if there's a problem.
