Hi guys, i'm starting to think about getting my license and getting me a bike. Any suggestions of good bikes to start with (has to be 125cc cos I'm only 20) and also any things to think about that are easy to overlook either to do with buying my first bike or to do with getting my license?

My dad's always had bikes so I know he'll help aswell. What I remember he's had a GPZ750, Zzr 600, suzuki Bandit 600, zzr1100 and on tuesday came home with a Yamaha Diversion 900

I don't know the in's and out's of the bike test these days.

I sat my Direct Access test on my 21st birthday (2004) and jumped straight onto a 2001 600cc Ninja. Now that the laws have changed you'l be restricted for however many years now, hard lines data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

Your best bet would be to try the DVLA website or a biker forum for info/ tips.

Bike wise if I were you and it falls within your budget get a 600cc sports bike then bang a restricter kit in it! I just sold my 2005 636 Ninja to a 19year old who was getting it restriced!!! Or if it must be a 125cc your after I would go for an Aprilla RS125.

Dads mate was visiting us today so I asked him to take me for a quick blast on his ZZR-1400 (awesome bike) Speed limits *were* abided too, don't worry data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

Until 21 you can take your test on a 125 and then ride upto 33bhp for two years. 21 plus if you take the test on a 500-600cc then no restriction.

This all changes on Jan 19th 2013, when basically (after passing your test) you can't ride anything over 46.6bhp (age 19 -23). You would have to sit your practical test again on a bigger bike to get an unrestricted licence once you are 24.

So I could do with passing before then? Or would I then have to take another test at 23 anyway? And for example if I passed my license tomorrow, would I have to wait for 2 years or wait until May 2013(when I turn 21) and I'd then be able to ride a larger bike?

You would be best to pass before Jan and then two years later you can ride anything without further testing.

I can only see that these changes will keep people away from bikes until they are 24. data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

Yeah thats the way it seems. Does look like I'll be having to wait or I might just try and get my license done and passed but not take it any further from there.
