It really shows that using all 7 SPE's help a lot, since the people behind the PS3 version of this program shows the PS3 is 30-40% faster then any CPU on the home market. But if you wanted to put a Cell CPU into a PC, you would need to buy a PCI add on, which the company behind the product, say it would cost you £7,000.

However since IBM still have an X86 contract, which hopefully will mean the Cell will be out for PC’s on the home market in the next two years, which would mean one thing, better folding for people without a PS3.

But the only way a PC doing folding, could rival the PS3 at folding at home is if someone has a motherboard, which support 2 Quad Core CPU's.

The other thing crippling it is that the PC client runs in the background and it is only using 10% of the available CPU time... I assume the PS3 version uses close to 100%...

And if you run a top of the range PC with Quad Core and 1000 watt PSU or 800 watt PSU for 24/7, the PS3 will still outpace it, while not using as much power, while also being left on for 24/7 I reckon.

Of course it would be nice to have [email protected] in the background sometimes - i'm listening to music right now, so no Folding, but there must be loads of processing power going unused...

You can add other computers by downloading the software from http://folding.stanford.edu but you have to use a different donor name.

The FAQ says they are PS3's on the map, but I question the accuracy of representation...highly unlikely especially when you see some of the remote locations. In fact, that would be a good way of finding out...going to remote part of Alaska and plugging in, start FAH and checking the globe map to see if you show up!

This team is really showing the power of the PS3 over the PC's, all we need to do now is beat some better overclocked PC [email protected] teams. Anyway I'm now 31st in the list.

However I think everyone should try and mark down PS3 with there current donor name, so if you say wanted Rob as a donor name, put Rob_PS3 or something like that, unless we have some PC people who snuck into this list.

Anyone read the article in the times on the ps3 / folding @ home project yesterday ? I have the article which is very intersting I could scan it in but not sure if we would be allowed to republish it even with credit to the times which is a shame......

Apparently the ps3 is now contributing 70% of the processing power for the whole project

It also says that there are only around 1000 people in the uk currently contributing. We have 50 people so far in the avforums team so we are contributing 5% of the UK total based on those numbers. I think thats an amazing acheivement ! In terms of work units processed its probably quite a bit more than that we have some really dedicated guys racking up big numbers !

The more people we can get on board the better. We have gone up another 500 places in the overall folding at home team leaderboard today. We are now up to 4400 odd out of over 50,000 teams I keep expecting us to come to a halt but we keep rising up the tables !

Anyone who hasnt joined please do so, its a very good cause and also good for the forums, its charitable after all
