Under normal circumstances, he would be a shoo-in. But the current Government has made his task unnecessarily hard. The views of those to whom I spoke uniformly echoed the sentiments which saw the Conservative Party lose over 1300 councillors in the local elections and record the worst result in our history – under nine per cent – in the European Parliament elections. These Peterborough voters told me, in effect: the Conservatives said for two years that we would leave the EU on March 29th. We didn’t and we won’t vote for you again until we do. Why should we listen to you on any other subject?

I'm sure Michael Gove is capable of delaying it until 2030. Not due to planning or controlled action I'm afraid, no by trying to make it happen in 2019. I just don't get anyone supporting him, has he succeeded at anything?

Michael Gove is enthusiastic about being ready to unite the Tory party, ready to deliver Brexit, ready to lead the country etc etc - so he can talk the talk.

He is also enthusiastic about continuously delaying Brexit to some unknown future.

His tenure as Education Secretary was a failure, he left behind many problems for others to fix or sweep under the carpet.

Basically he's a political lurker, waiting in the shadows ready to jump out and cause damage when the opportunity occurs.

Not to be trusted.

I agree that Gove is not to be trusted and mediocre at best - but he is by a country mile the most competent and effective Brexiteer.

I agree. But he is still the best and most competent Brexiteer standing for the leadership. Don't get me wrong, if he wins the leadership contest it would be a disaster for this country but he without a doubt the least worst option.

Last time around I would have agreed with you, not this time around though. He has been to loyal to May and has ruled out a no deal brexit.

From a brexit point of view it needs to be one of the harder no deal candidates which rules out all the main players (even boris voted for mays terrible deal 3rd time around).

From restoring the party from its current split it needs to be a middle way candidate like Rory Stewart who by saying he will work with Nigel Farage is impressing more and more.

I doubt it will get to the members to vote on, but if it does, as much as I’m hard no brexit, Stewart is looking promising and will be worth a hard think on. He’s impressed me enough to put a wager on anyhow
