So she didn't stand on a platform of holding a referendum and then not abiding by it.

Cool.

Is she going to hold a by election? The facts around why people voted for her have changed and the people now know things they didn't at the time of the election.

Mainly that Jo Swinson is not a democrat.

Mar 2018.

'We still have the chance to stop Brexit'

The MP, who is campaigning for a second referendum, told the BBC that the UK public did not know that final terms of the deal when they voted in 2016, making it "totally reasonable" to have another vote.

If I was her, I'd have said, "Leaving the EU is a big step, there should be a second referendum to confirm this is what people want. No different to saying, are you sure?" or "we accept that there was a vote to leave, no-one knows what "leave" meant, there should be a referendum on what it means and whether it's what we want."

Or a million other ways of wording it.

What Jo Stalinson's done is given every leaver a belt of ammunition as to why there should never be another referendum. She's great if you are for Remain, but then they'd probably vote LibDem anyway.

And if there was a second referendum, and it was for remain, no need for leavers to accept the result. They have "principles."

What's the point of having a vote at all if we can all just ignore it? And isn't here party actually called "Democrats?"

If she's not happy with voting maybe she should stand down. It was a vote that put her where she is now.

My thinking is it's alright to say you won't abide by the result of someone else's referendum if you don't like it, but a bit suspect to call one yourself and effectively only put the answer you want on the ballot paper.

Have they changed though?

She (and her party) have openly campaigned on the “Bollox to Brexit” rhetoric, which is pretty clear.  The fact Guido, and by virtue his adoring followers, is now calling her undemocratic for saying that she wouldn’t vote in favour of leaving in Parliament is a little disingenuous.  We live in a democratic society, where nearly half of the voters were in favour of what her and her party have campaigned for, so I’m not going to clutch my handbag and cry for democracy when she stands by what she pledged (which is surprising for a politician I know, but there it is).

I agree, hence why I said that I don’t agree with what she said.

I have to wonder what you would be saying if this isn't defending her.

It's a simple fact. Until yesterday the Libdems stood on a platform to have a confirmatory referendum.

Jo Swinson has now gone on record that she wants a vote but will only abide by the result she wants. It's a policy that the Libdems have never stated in any of their previous campaigning. Despite you trying to portray things as this is what they stood for in the last election. They didn't.

It's a policy that regardless of whether you are leave or remain, should be utterly condemned.

But you won't. You'll just repeat I'm not defending her but....

She should at least be honest that she doesn't want a referendum. But instead she wants to keep a cloak of democratic legitimacy while planning to ignore a vote she doesn't really want.

Seems to be contagious. Caroline Lucas now admits she wouldn't back Brexit even if there was a second leave vote.
