I never though I would see the day that Judy Dench put in a poor performance but the rest of the cast we just as bad. If you have never seen the Rex Harrison and Margeret Rutherford 1945 film, it is everything that you want from a Coward play transported onto the screen. The dialogue is quick and sparkling, the asides feel genuine. This version is flabby, there is far too much air in the converstaion and the actors feel like they are delivering lines rather than living a part. Were they trying perhaps too hard to find a new direction; to distance themselves from the earlier characterisations? This is every bit as bad as Stallone's attempt to remake 'Get Carter'. If you are going to remake a film, remake one that was a good idea done badly not a classic.
