Don’t forget everyone has an angle, Greenwald and Jonathan and the various Governments as well.

For example if you knew there was a secure device out there would you want people to know about it? Or would you rather have them believe they can all be broken into?

But you can still install new apps and receive updates on current devices. From what I can tell (regardless of the 90 day extension) at the moment, the only thing that will affect current devices is the inability to install newer versions of Android.

Time will tell. It may all be over by then. Likewise active blocks may be put in place. Naturally there will always be ways around it, just not a great experience for all involved. It’s a shame as when you like Android they’ve got some great devices.

Will this move potentially affect other chinese phones such as oneplus in the future?

Google already announced they will continue to support current phones, which would include the new release's, as they are already certified with them. Anything in development, different story and will more than likely run Huawei's OS

For typical GAPPS, these updates are handled by the play store and not the vendor so as long as the device came with this installed then these will continue to update,

Security/patch and software feature updates will have to be developed by the vendor using the AOSP branch, main negative effect being delays in release, most vendors are not very quick to update anyway but I would expect this to impact the typical monthly security update cycle.

for handsets such as the mate 20pro EMUI 9.1 has already been released in china and is in beta for emui 10 (android Q) so I would not expect these releases to be effected either.

Beyond this I would expect them to build there own OS based on android along with there own payment services and store front, kind of like how amazon functions with its fire devices

My only concern as a mate 20pro owner is google pay/contactless payments, those who have been in official beta's with vendors such as Google/Samsung and Huaweietc... will know that this will not function unless the android software release is certified, which normally doesn't happen until it is final. I do find it unlikely that google will certify any Huawei release regardless of how it's built.

I think they’ve recently changed the constitution so he’s basically there as long as he wants to be now.
