So could this end up like Barclays, who recently dropped it's free Kaspersky for those that bank there after pressure from governments and have the same effect with contactless payments with pressure applied to the same banks...?

It is possible i guess, if the banks/governments feel strongly enough against Huaweithen they could threaten to remove their institution from googles list unless they take action. It's funny you mention Barclays as they do not support google pay and use their own app with NFC support so I would expect that this would continue to work.

Once certification is removed, then as an owner I would have to make a decision between contactless payments or continued updates which patch againstdiscovered vulnerabilities, not something I am looking forward to tbh.

I do think if Huawei tried to set up a payment service, similar to Samsung Pay, then it would struggle to gain traction due to the bad rep they currently have, I would not expect banks to be rushing to sign up for it.

cheers

It says it will run Android apps. But surely not the likes of YouTube, Google Maps etc. Which is surely not good enough for those outside of China.

All unknown at the moment.
I'm not a big user, if at all for some of those services supplied as apps by Google and prefer to use browsers on my Android devices, so if they disappeared from my devices I wouldn't really be inconvenienced.

BBC reports ARM has instructed staff not to deal with Huawei. So without a Trump reversal basically no more smartphone business

There's an opportunity here for OnePlus to offer P30 & Pro trade ins and come out as heroes

I wonder how long it will be before the US starts on Oneplus/OPPO/BBK after all they are just another Chinese vendor that will have the same rules set by the Chinese government.

This is going to be a much bigger issue for Huawei than just replacing Android. All the chips inside handsets supplied by western vendors will be also be banned. That may not be a problem for current owners but Huawei could just pull all support if they are effectively banned from producing new phones.

So as a new P20 Pro owner should I be worried ?
I got it on Friday on Contract, should I consider returning it for a non Huawei Model or not actually worry ?

I won't be looking to get rid of my newly acquired P30 Pro. I would be very surprised if all of this political posturing isn't resolved one way or another within the next 90 days

furryhobnob Publish time 27-11-2019 22:44:26

Whether it gets resolved or not, your p20 pro will continue to work with the play store etc, it's phones that havnt been released by Huawei yet that will struggle if not resolved.
