Will we still get all the Google app updates on our phones, Gmail, Maps, YouTube, etc......

Android is Open Source, so Google can't stop anyone using it, it's just the extra stuff that they have. It also means that Huawei will get the updates late, whereas at the moment, it's sent to everyone early, for them to check everything works

No.

On current phones, yes we will. I even updated Gmail this morning..

My apologies - thought he/she was asking more generally. Yes, I believe current phones will be supported for now (though it’s not clear). Future purchases of these phones will certainly not be supported with these apps.

It basically boils down to if you currently own a Huawei phone it won’t be bricked though it may become gimped. If you buy a Huawei phone in the future then forget Google and it’s apps (though you may get a super-duper new Chinese operating system and all the kids will be jealous).

The US government has granted 90 days grace for existing Huawei devices. Without an extension or a deal happening that will be it

Surely the Snowden leaks, be it the PRISM programme, or other parts showed the access the US authorities have to data? I'd strongly recommend reading Greenwalds' book No Place to Hide, which outlines (having been the conduit for Snowden) the staggering range and reach of government access, be it via backdoors or other mechanisms.

And lets not quite lump Apple in with the others, collecting and selling on your data is not at the heart of their business model, which cannot be said of many of the other US tech companies.

Apple may not sell data on but if you believe they arent at the behest of the US authorities when required you are kidding yourself. I wouldnt trust the US Government any more than the Chinese Govt......only difference is that they appear to be on our side.

Agreed, and the Snowden leaks illustrate that even Apple had to accede to certain backdoor access.

But I'll take their much reduced reliance on selling on and using your data over the rest, and I'm not sure I r so even that lose.

“and I'm not sure I r so even that lose”
