Gents, we are three years and a referendum campaign too late for such simplistic and unrealistic comparisons to be trotted out again. The reality is our country and economy are inter-twined with 40 years of European political integration.Even when we are out of the EU, we will be maintaining the closets of ties.It is in our interests to workout the destination and plot the least damaging course to get there prior to departure. You can't do that by having a blind Brexit.

I would gently point out, if the Brexiteers were just able to articulate the destination - including gathering sufficient public support to ensure it is the will of the majority - and Brexit could be swiftly achieved. So what are you waiting for?

It was already done. How much of terms like soft and hard brexit did you hear before the referendum. Nope I didn’t think so either.

Sorry but all of that got introduced after the referendum was run. Actually a lot of it muttered by the Lib Dem’s.

It’s just taken too long, too much interference by those who didn’t want to leave. Look you are still doing it now and several others on here. And all this nonsense with Northern Ireland. That should have been a surprise. Of course we require a border, it’s logical. We all voted and choose to leave so let’s get that border in place and leave.

Best way to get a plaster off is do it quickly. It’s taken too long and trying to please everyone in a scenario where there is no pleasing.

Yes 3 yrs of what, nothing has been achieved, 3 wasted yrs, 3 yrs of wasted promises. The bottom line is the politicians have failed to carry out the referendum result.

The added lower portion of your post is just obfuscation. The destination is no longer belonging to the EU political block, economic ties can be negotiated post Brexit.
Comparatively the world survived and rebuilt post WW2 so I'm sure little old Britain leaving the EU isn't such a big deal is it? Or maybe certain people have vested interests in keeping the status quo.

richp007 Publish time 25-11-2019 22:19:04

Certain people have vested interests in getting us out of the EU. It works exactly the same both ways. Anyone who believes that these people (and we all know who they are) have British interests at heart over Brexit and not their own, are utter fools.

Leaving wouldn't have been an issue for many had it not been botched. 3 years have been wasted because there was no credible plan. A bunch of amateurs thought it was going to be a walk in the park. How very wrong they were.

I have no doubt that long term we would survive, and the EU would continue. But why cause all this unnecessary pain in the shorter term? Really, what sense is there in doing so? It makes no sense. It's insanity, and if it were a person we'd be treating them for being as such.

Ruperts slippers Publish time 25-11-2019 22:19:05

It doesn't matter what vested interests there were pre vote, they had zero influence on the outcome. The referendum result was out. It wasn't a vote on a plan or the future. The result was leave.
This credible plan idea is yet more stalling from those who don't want to carry out the referendum vote.

PaulieW Publish time 25-11-2019 22:19:06

This whole process was flawed from the beginning. The main aim of the referendum was to pacify the right wing of the Tory Party. Nobody seriously expected the vote to leave. Cue the resulting chaos after the result. There was no plan for leaving save the big lie emblazoned on the red bus. Three years wasted trying to square the circle. As a remainer I was perfectly willing to accept the result and leave but not at the cost of economic suicide of leaving without a deal. Anybody contemplating leaving without a deal needs to be sectioned.

Crank opportunists have jumped on the Brexit bandwagon to make the UK a laughing stock throughout the world. If Farage/Laxley Lennon are the champions of democracy then we are journeying down a very dark road.

richp007 Publish time 25-11-2019 22:19:07

So equally what do the vested interests of those who want to stay matter?

And unfortunately too, having an attitude of "we just voted out and get on with it" doesn't cut it. The consequences of seeing through a major, major decision have to be considered. Especially if they affect people's lives. The consequences of leaving now are considered by many experts too great, especially with this awful deal.

And Leaver's love to shout how wrong experts have been about leaving so far. But will they admit they are speculating about how awful staying in the EU would actually be? Of course they won't. It's 100% guaranteed to all Leavers that staying in the EU is the end of the world.

But how do they know? Funny one that....

Interesting comment.

How would you go about sectioning these people who have a different opinion to yours?

EarthRod Publish time 25-11-2019 22:19:08

Could you provide a link please to a Leaver who said that?

Any Leaver will do.
