Hyotei is great, was there a couple of years ago.
If you're still in Kyoto, I'd also recommend Jiki Miyazawa if you can get in (10-15000/pp   drinks) - there's only around 10 seats.
Okariba a little out from the centre was also worth a visit (this one isn't high end).

Hi Folks
Just stumbled across this thread which I'm finding really useful particularly as I'm planning on going on a holiday in 18 months. Like most I haven't really got a clue, so I've just started researching. This is supposed to be a surprise for the missus so I can't involve her just yet.

We both think Kyoto looks interesting. I've found a couple of self catering holiday homes within 20 minutes from the centre. I was thinking of 10 days including travel.Do you think there would be enough to keep us occupied using Kyoto as a base with a few excursions into the surrounding country.

10 days is never enough time for Japan. We have been walking around 6-8 miles a day. Seeing lots of different things. Although as this is the last full day before going to Tokyo it's a little rest & relaxation day. And packing data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

Going all that way no less than 2 weeks really.

So jealous, I was there around Halloween a couple of years ago. Really need to get back out there. So much to see, so much to do andI so much to eat!

Wake up early to go to the fish market if you're staying in Tokyo!
