Nothing really, I'd just prefer something that is tuned into the car rather than an extra bit of kit that cheats or tricks the ECU.

Fair enough, as long as you realise that for less than £1,000 there is no way you are going to get a remap that is tuned into your car. It is simply a generic map increasing fuel pressure, fuel injection timing and boost pressure; no alterations or tuned into your specific car....

Not saying it is bad, just ensuring you are informed with the facts...

I had my A6 2.5TDI V6 remapped a few years ago via the ECU. Best thing I ever did. They had two options. Economy, middle and beast.
I went for the middle and gained more HP, Torque that could pull a train and better fuel economy.

Now the search begins to find someone reputable locally, I'm in no rush my cars still got 11 months warranty left.

I had my car custom remapped for £250. They did it on the dyno and tweaked it based on the car, ran it on the rolling road again, tweaked, rinse and repeat. Well worth it!

That is an absolute bargain...

That was 7 years ago, on a golf. My mate did his 911 for around £1200 (several years later at a different place I should add).

Yes it sounds like they used you vehicle to develop a map that they then can resell. I mean multiple dyno runs and a tailored map. Hey for that kind of money I’d have one data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

Remap over a box without a doubt.

I got mine done at a place the VW golf forums were recommending, so if anything, they used one they has developed for the same model as mine and then tweaked it for my car.
