Hands in with an EPL5...but not powered. Great. Feels a good size though a lot smaller than the DSLR - much smaller than I thought.

Kit lens feels a bit light though. Is it tougher than it looks? How does it collapse? Or rather shrink into the body? Display model was zip tied to the lens at Curry's (I'm going elsewhere later) and I couldn't figure it out without setting the alarm off!

I have both the Panasonic G6 and the Olympus PEN E-P5....My photo go to is the Oly...and my video go to is the Panny.....However the Panny G6 is great as it is, has a dSLR feel to it, and great manual controls...Doesn't come close to image stabilisation like the Oly....

Lens wise the M43 format is very very well served, some excellent crackers of lenses available...I went to it after my Nikon full size gear got stolen...And I would go back to it again....Focus is fast like a dSLR, lens quality is up there...Photo quality is fantastic....And to me the ergonomics are well sorted as well...

Sony, Canon major lens shortage both new and second hand in my opinion...or at least lenses that I find interesting...

Fuji I like, just got concerns about their auto focus speed...I'm not into still life...

The epl5 kit lens had a lock switch on the side. Hold and twist to extend.
It doesn't collapse down too much and nowhere near the new pancake job that comes with the new tiny omd or the power zoom Panasonic that covers the same range.
None of them is pocketable IMHO but if size is really important you'll need to go beyond the kit lens in the elp5

It depends on the pocket. My pen 5 easily fits with its 17mm lens attached in my barbour quilted jacket.

Yeah the pancake would be great as a redeemable freebie should've bought last week!

So Fuji's are slow are they. Which have the fastest AF, and best in low light? Are MFT's just the Panasonics and Olympus?

just the two "mainstream" manufacturers at the moment but a few other smaller names showing interest/commitment...

No Fujis aren't slow, they just aren't as fast as the latest m43, all mirrorless suffer in low light though. Like I said IQ fuji, AF m43.

I think that is a fair way of describing it.....I wouldn't say no to either, as Fuji has got an excellent lens lineup as well....But faster focus is more important to me...Otherwise I may as well have gotten a Leica...

But M43 with gems like the super fast 17mm f1.8 from Olympus...or the cheap and brilliant 45mm f1.8, or the not so cheap but super brilliant 75mm f1.8....And then there is the 12-35 and 35-100 f2.8 from panasonic, the classic and oh so dreamy 25mm f1.4 and the new and super delicious 42.5mm f1.2 from Panasonic...All super small and great....

However I know that with those statements I've just blown the OP's budget, and I think that is the point....Just like with any other system, the real quality is in the lenses that are available...

When it comes to budget, you won't get better than the Canon EF-M lenses. Pity there just aren't more of them
