True. I never took much notice of Pimax when they brought out the 4k headset but the 8k with lighthouse and SteamVr support is a whole different beast.

What I like about Pimax is their speed. They literally took everyone critisms of gen 1 squared the boxes and ticked them off one by one. Who would believe we are so close to eliminating SDE and having maximised FOV at the same time with almost zero optical distortion?

Even if Oculus manages to get CV2 out by early 2019 are they going to got wider than 200 degrees or have supply of 4k OLEDs from Samsung?

It's going to be interesting and I only hope I'm on the right side of the fence come Pimax's moment of truth.

I`d doubt they would be interested at this point. Their investment roadmap looks to be laid out for the next couple of years.
If anything I`d say the Pimax offering will mop up a lot of Vive users, due to the fact they can use the same tracking  /  controllers.

Aren't HTC and google making a stand alone as well?

I guess eventually that's where VR will end up. Super lightweight headset with lifelike frame rates and no need for a super PC to run it all.

I think an investor will buy into Pimax at some point and hopefully it will be Valve.

HTC are readying Oasis stand alone.

Thing is PC VR is still trying to catch up with traditional 2D games due to 90fps requirements. Mobile will always 5-10 years behind PCVR VR in terms of graphics. Take Alien Isolation for example, it’s already 3 years old and won’t appear on a Stand Alone VR device for another 7 years imo. Foveated rendering needs to be the norm across all VR devices to bridge the 30fps shortfall.

I was very worried when Facebook bought oculus but so far at least they have done right by oculus and their users... And a lot of the oculus store exclusives that vive users like playing, often for free, would not exist if not for oculus.

Gaben has already said professionally he does not care if vr succeeds or fails. MS and Sony have a history of dropping hardware once the novelty wears off.... Facebook.... Too soon to tell but everything I have seen so far shows they are fully invested in vr imo

Valve have the talent, the money and the IP to really push vr on with great software support, but they don't care about to do it.

They funded some nice tech demos and their hardware platform is decent enough, but where are the valve killer apps ? Official portal vr could be so good but instead ...... Nothing

But Oculus have stated they eventually want to stop selling games and leave it to third parties to populate Oculus Home. And they don’t make much money from the HMD because they keep slashing prices. Which means they want to become another Steam clone.

I actually think GabeN is caught in a predicament because he knows if VR succeeds Steam will loose some market share to Oculus Home. The big question is how much market share.
