Pimax 8K is a cutting edge virtual reality device designed for VR futurists. Our goal is to create an intuitive VR without the shade of the headset, and sharp enough that you won't be disturbed by pixels.

We doubled FOV to 200 degrees, with an increased resolution to 2*3840x2160. Meanwhile, we have eliminated motion sickness, which is often associated with longer exposure to a virtual environment.

Pimax 8K VR has been built to support the mainstream content currently available in the market, including Steam VR, while offering the largest field-of-view (FOV) of 200° and the highest resolution (2*3840x2160) on any VR headset on the market with less than 15ms latency.

The motion sickness fix is a bold claim.

So yesterday I jumped on the Kickstarter. Turns out to be £402.20 just for the headset which means I’ll Be using the Vive controllers and base stations for a little longer.

There were enough Videos doing the rounds to prove to me two things. Resolution and screen door were a huge upgrade over current gen with minimal godrays or SDE. FOV is going to be unrivalled because who’s going to go bigger than 200 degrees when it already fill all you vision? Resolution is going to be unrivalled, the limitations on display port and current graphics cards means 2x4k will be around for the next 5 years.

So there’s little point waiting when the Kickstarter gives the headstrap and $100 discount on the wireless module.

Fingers crossed it doesn’t get delayed and arrives in January as planned.

Just wish I could get over my aversion to Kickstarter.

Hope it arrives on time for you. If it delivers on all its promises then I'll be first in the queue for the retail release.

Really happy to see them offering a version sans lighthouse and controllers.

First time Kickstarter for me Nivek TT. My thinking is if the Pimax gets good reviews in January there could be a flood of orders and if Pimax don’t have the resources to scale up quickly there could be major delays in supply.

It could all go very south too and you'll see nothing for your investment.

When I can buy it from a retailer with my credit card I'm there.

Pimax and Knuckles early next year will be a nice upgrade to the best VR on the market!

Looks like we went for the same deal. I still have the Lighthouses and wands from my Vive.

I'd like to see this do well, although I fear it may be slightly to early. My main questions, as a Vive owner and primarily a driving sim user are:

1.) Wide FOV sounds awesome, does this work seamlessly in games at the moment using SteamVR? How does side peripheral vision feel moving quickly at 90fps?

2.) Is performance ok without foveted rendering. Seems like its a missing feature that whilst not implemented yet, could easily be part of SteamVR in the near future with great performance advantages.

Some good questions and probably some that can’t be answered before release.

The Pimax works with all SteamVR games in the same way as the Vive does although some games are more graphically intense than other. Sims are resource hogs so you’re going to need a beefy PC if you want to run something like Project Cars in VR at its best. The Pimax 8k will be like running a 4k monitor at 90hz!

But! Pimax can use Brain Warp which alternates the image from panel to panel thus doubling FPS. This only gets used if your PC drops below 90fps so depends on your PC spec.

Pimax are working on an eye tracking module for foveated rendering but I don’t think they’ve shown a prototype yet so don’t rely on that happening in the first half of 2018. You’ll need brute force instead.

The 200 degree FOV works with all Steam games and should be seamless. There was some stretching a few weeks ago but I think Steam stepped in a found a solution. My guess is they upped the resolution for true 4k output.

Do I think the Pimax 8k is going to be perfect? No.

Do I think the Pimax 8k is going to be the best choice in 2018? Yes.
