That may have been me. No ED, no rift. The game is that important for me which is why I have been whining like a spoilt child on their forums. I have had to back off a bit as I was getting rather embarrassing constantly asking about it

I don't get it, if the game is the all important factor, then surely the tech they've decided to primarily support should be a simple choice?  Considering they were initially supporting the Rift and are now opting for Vive, they must have their reasons, surely that should be the bigger question?

I am taking a gamble . with no interest in room sized tracking for me the rift is the better fit. Lighter more ergonomically, prefer the look of the half moons IF I bother getting them and by most accounts better image quality (at the cost of possibly slightly lesser fov)

But the other thing is I do not have fath in the vive being available in April, coupled with my worry it will be out of my price range. The rift is already way more than I said I would pay.

Is the sensible choice to wait and see? Sure it is but I have taken the gamble ED will work, which it it pays off means by the start of April I may be back IN my ship. If I play it safe the earliest I reckon I can get a hmd may be July and I will lose out on the free copy of eve v as well.

Then the all important factor is the Rift, just accept FD's decision and have faith that they will do a good job supporting the Oculus.  I am sure it will be decent and can only imagine it will be a considerable improvement over what you have experienced with DK2.  They seem like a particularly proud bunch of devs, especially with regards to VR as they are kind of flag bearers in this instance, I doubt they will allow anything half-assed to be put out.

Anyway, their reasons for moving to Vive may be related to upcoming content.  Maybe the room tracking is key to some of their plans and they know that they will be able to maximise the VR experience with what the Vive offers?  Regardless though, I am sure the Oculus Rift will be well supported either way.

Doesn't make sense to me. The Rift is out first, it's likely significantly cheaper than Vive (and doesn't need room VR), we still don't know if the vive release will slip, so why focus on the Vive? (If there's no deal in the background).

Be interesting to see how this pans out...

Perhaps they see the Vive as the better Horse to back. Sure there's a reason for it though. Easier to develop for perhaps.

Frontier Developments will no doubt have their reasons.  Could well be that they expect the Vive release to tie in with upcoming updates that they plan to release for ED that allow for movement around the ship, multicrew etc?  All speculation mind you.

Personally, I'm not overly interested in the 'room' experience either, it just isn't practical for me where I currently have my PC, I'm more keen on the 'cockpit' experience.  However, I am happy to wait for the time being.

That is the sensible position, but it's difficult when you've experienced Elite in VR   I've still not played Elite for months because I want to experience it properly in VR again...but outside of the whole Rift/Vive question, there's a ton of other considerations.  USB ports, GPUs blah blah blah...it really does make sense to wait it out.

I guess I can consider myself lucky to have not actually experienced VR yet, as I'm sure if I had, I'd be chomping at the bit also.  I honestly cannot wait to try it out because the idea that what I see in something like Elite on my monitor, which is merely a 2D image trying to convey depth is suddenly given an actual sense of depth where you feel like you have a sense of presence and scale in that world (coupled with all of the head tracking etc), sounds fantastic.

My point mainly though is that I would guess that FD's plans to primarily support Vive are probably tied into their expansion plans for the game and whether those plans could be a potential buying point for you or anyone else in the future.

Tried EVE Valkyrie today but it made me feel sick as a dog. There's a lot of spinning around. I found that the more I treat it like I was really there, move my head around to follow the ships I'm spinning around to see, the better it gets. But if I stay pretty static and just use the controller to move around, mew.

Probably not my kind of thing anyway but I was a bit surprised it made me feel like that - I can put hours in on Assetto Corsa and not feel the slightest bit queasy.
