I got to try a friends dk2 over Christmas and to be honest I can't see what all the fuss is about.

The biggest issue for me was that your vision is closed off (the best I can describe it). It completely destroys any immersion and makes it all pointless to me. Perhaps I just had too high expectations.

Must admit I've never heard anyone say they can't see what the fuss is about!  VR is awesome whichever way you slice it (imho), but yes, FOV is restricted.  What games/demos did you try out of interest?

What games did you play? Did you configure it for your eyes? The thing where you move the green lines to the edge of the screen?

I also tried a VR simulation a while ago, not with Rift or anything, but one of those full setups and I too was just not overawed by it.

I don't like the feeling of being cut off.

I also don't see what the Vive room movement has to really offer apart from some gimmicky demo's. Most of us want to relax when playing. Try playing 3-4 hours of Wii Party or similar, it gets on your nerves.

There are some people who are not really interested in VR, I know I am one. I think it would be cool to play a game like Mechwarrior or Elite, to try it. I don't think it is something that I would use on a daily basis. Also most of the games I play, like DOTA2, RTS, TBS or Action RPGs don't seem like they would fit VR that well anyway.

Ooooh... explore the Overlook hotel from the Shining! Wonder if there are freaky naked old women and elevators of blood?

I think you would be surprised at how well those games would work in VR. You would take the 'god' view, looking down on this epic war playing out below you and have the freedom to tilt your head to see events / threats that would normally be off screen. Or stick all that in miniature on a virtual table and have the freedom to walk around it via Vive's room tracking, a sort of real time board game. For me, the 3d brings a sense of scale a TV can never offer and the freedom to look where you want brings a lot to the gameplay. The third person is just as exciting as the first person perspective IMO.

That would mean you'd have to play any top down game permanently looking down though. Can't see see that being comfortable or any fun at all.

True, but not if you alter the perspective origin, being immersed means can counter the need for a levelling horizon if that makes sense.... Probably end up doing a role poly!

Not straight down but probably at a downward angle. I think that's how most would view their TV or read a book for many hours.
