Someone I know used to run a corner shop many years ago. When he took it on he was told when his fresh produce was delivered to put it into 3 sections. Tomatoes etc were divided and priced up as 'premium'; 'normal' and 'basics'. These were the SAME tomatoes just with a different price and sign above them. For months he used to see that the high price and low price would sell really well, the 'normal' ones hardly moved.
He never actually labelled anything as 'organic', but it does go to show that most people will buy according to price or how something is perceived, even if they look identical.
And I am aware that many people have heard about this sort of thing going on. I am not saying my mate invented this principle, but I bet there is a lot of this happening in all types of trade. |
