One issue is that the EU has comprehensive regulations (true) but they don't have a great reputation in enforcing them.
Recent tests have shown that significant proportions (around 23%) of chicken sold in UK shops and butchers has Salmonella contamination. Under EU regulations and laws that shouldn't happen. Nor should the introduction of horse into the beef supply chain.
Additionally, studies are showing high, and increasing levels of antibiotic-superbugs (campylobacter and MRSA) in UK supermarket poultry and pork, most likely as a result of the use of antibiotics in livestock as directed by EU regulations.
Proper cooking will kill off the Salmonella and superbugs but lapses could result in illness.
