I also mentioned Afghanistan and the forward operating bases that are/were far off from the big military bases and camps. The British Army often faced off against the Taliban in hot desert conditions and often times Taliban fighters slipped off and melted into the local populations. The military planners know how difficult fighting ISIS with boots on the ground would be. I mentioned Montgomery and Rommel because it highlights just how unforgiving that environment is to well organized armies. ISIS will face similar problems. The other thing to keep in mind is that if the local populations decide to turn against ISIS then the ability to melt away reduces. Fighting ISIS has to happen on multiple fronts, not least sowing internal divisions within ISIS and exploiting it. It also means we'll have to use a mix of conventional and unconventional warfare. Sending boots on the ground in huge numbers would be pointless at this stage of the game.
The SAS were engaged in unconventional warfare in North Africa, doing the kind of tasks you seem to think are impossible. Go look up the raids they carried out in North Africa and you'll find out that all they had were jeeps, limited ammo, fuel and water plus survival bags. And no support from the British Army until they made it back to their base camps. Without those raids disrupting Rommel's supply lines, we would have likely lost to Rommel in the end. As attempting to do so with conventional troops and battle tactics resulted in massive causalities.
Special Forces are not magic bullets, but when used properly they can achieve quite a lot that conventional warfare could not achieve.
They are a mix of battle hardened jihadists and newcomers who enter the fray via Turkey etc
Also keep in mind that the Kurds are no strangers to these sorts of conditions or fighting using unconventional means. If they are armed properly, then they'll be able to take the fight to ISIS more directly.
ISIS has only made the stunning gains in Iraq due to Saddam's former Generals directing the operations. If you can prise them away from ISIS, then you will inflict a lot of damage onto ISIS ability to hold onto it's gains. Multiple fronts have to be fought against ISIS and it will take years to defeat them. |
