French and European Elections

I'm not to up on the French chaps (and chap'esses) in the election, but wasn't it Le Pen's father who spouted that bile about the holocaust, and not Marine Le Pen herself ?

Did I say she did? Her party (formerly his party) is full of them, including her inner circle. You can't detoxify (or de-demonise, as she puts it) such a legacy.

We might know the result tonight. Certainly a nail biting election considering the ups and downs of the candidates. Looking like it will be Le Pen and Macron through to the next round from the exit polls. Voter turn out is high.

The worst result for the Brussels would be the two anti EU candidates, Le Pen and far-left candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon. He makes Jeremy Corbyn look like a Thatcherite!

A bit more than mere 'association' when you're actually leader of an organisation rife with white supremacists, holocaust deniers and links to paramilitaries, and appoint people with such a history. No different to the BNP/NF here. Detoxification is bollocks, it's like a Mafia family claiming to have gone legit. Disband and move on. Nick Griffin admitted they were all racists when he was voted out of the European Parliament.

Should be an interesting few weeks in France.

One would assume that Macron is in a very strong position, and it's his to lose - but then I thought the same about Clinton last year!

There's no electoral college bollocks with this May run-off (is there?), so popular vote should prevail.

Looks like Macron beat Le Pen by a whisker in the first round ... approx 24% to 23%, or 23% to 22%, depending on the news outlet. Not bad going for a year old party.

So, round 2 is on 7 May 2017 between Macron and Le Pen.

First round vote estimates: Macron = 23.7%, Le Pen = 21.7%

Now we have two candidates, the people that voted for the all the others that have dropped off are likely to support the centrist, Macron. Looks like he will be the new President.
