These issues are not exclusive to one community - although gangs or groups of offenders tend to be of the same groups, be it ethnic, organisational, religious or otherwise.
Priests, care home workers, young offenders institute staff etc have all been linked to paedophile groups and long term abuse.
There is potentially a specific issue of certain Asian groups of men seeing Caucasian male and females as less worthy of respect, trouble makers, less moral or spiritual, and therefore fair game to abuse.
It does appear that there is a cultural/religious attitude that exists amongst some religious minorities that has propagated these crimes amongst Asian Muslim men and it does need addressing and not sugar coating.
The same sort of cultural attitudes have played a part with the police and authorities in terms of being less inclined to believe children from poor or troubled families and labeling them as trouble makers whilst on the other hand, giving too much respect and belief in so called pillars of the community. That is why famous people, politicians, respected business men, authority figures and religious leaders have got away with things in the past.
Giving them the benefit of the doubt, the fear of upsetting the establishment and bringing disrepute to religious organisations, politics, the police or institutions has been the prime factor in many historic and even relatively recent abuse cases.
Racism and bigotry has played a large part in all of these high profile cases - both from a fear of causing upset and a lack of respect or care about certain groups in society.
PS I really hope that every single one of the purpetrators faces justice, as well as all those that turned a blind eye. An senior authority figure that ignored the reports and allowed this to continue should not just be sacked, but also face criminal prosecution along with the scum they let get away with it. |
