Also the UK can in fact control much of the EU migration, as France chose to when Poland joined. In any case the British government could slash non-EU immigration any time it wants to (despite what Vote Leave claimed), but it doesn't because that would trash the economy. So if you expect things to dramatically change after brexit, you are in for disappointment.

I think you have mistaken me for someone who doesn’t support migration. I’m all up for migrants, we need more. There is nothing wrong with controlled migration.

We have controlled immigration. It's just that liars say we don't, while we exercise those same controls to ruin British people's lives.

We have always had the ability to influence secondary economic and social levers to discourage immigration as long as the measures apply equally to all.  The clear proof of that is the post Brexit vote reduction that dropped the value of sterling - that was an uncontrolled crash but it could easily have been achieved through a planned economic policy and the effect on immigration would have been the same.

But of course, we didn’t do that because this country overwhelmingly benefits from so-called mass migration.

Why can't we just do what normal countries do and directly control our immigration policies?

Is it really your position that to control migration we should devalue the pound?

Indeed. We can, within the freedom of movement framework, apply temporary restrictions which would have limited the numbers of Polish people allowed to come to the UK.

The French did just that.

We can in fact also enforce the normal freedom of movement rules such as requiring people to leave after a short period if they don't find a job, but choose not to do so.

No of course not, because we NEED immigrants.  They are essential to our economy, our public service and our daily community life.  But the OPTION is there to do it if required.  Which of course makes a mockery of all those who say we have NO levers to control EU immigration.

We just had inadequate ones.

Devaluing the pound is indiscriminate. It doesn't help us attract higher quality immigrants while deterring low value ones. Plus it has knock on impacts to inflation and the like.

I'll ask again. Why can't we just be a normal country with sovereign control of our own immigration policy?

Ok technically you are right, we can make ourselves very unattractive to anyone who has an interest to come. But can we please have a sensible conversation about real controlled migration? I mean why would we want to live ourselves in a sh*t country?
