Pacquiao should retire now. He has been one of my favourite fighters of the last 10 years or so but he peaked 4 or 5 years back. I think at height of his powers, he would have probably beaten Mayweather with his ferocious and relentless brutality but, that side to his game has now gone and with it, his chances of beating Mayweather.
Mayweather has been the most accomplished boxer of his generation and his almost lethargic defensive counter puching style hasn't changed with age, and subsequently any fight between the pair now would be the most one sided contest in the history of boxing. Pacman can no longer fall back on his energy sapping ferocity of old which a few years back would have had Mayweather in real trouble and I think he knew it.
I feel that's one of the reasons he wouldn't take the risk on the fight years ago, when they were both in their prime. 4-5 years back when the fans wanted the fight, Mayweather knew he would have to get badly hurt in the ring to beat Pacman and I'm not sure he had stomach for it. Now though, he could simply outbox Manny fairly safe in the knowledge that he isn't going to get a real kicking in the process due to Mannys decline.
It's a pity because it would have been a stellar contest at the time whereas now it would be little more than a sideshow grudge match between two fighters (with one whose best days are long gone) to generate big money and little else.
Hopefully, Paquiao will resist temptation for the millions (which he doesn't need) on offer and go into politics and forget all about this fight and leave the fans to argue the question of "what might have been"... because his reputation earned in his wars in the ring simply isn't worth tarnishing for a match up with Mayweather now. |
