What's more annoying is that at 07:55 I was out on a run and had to sprint home as fast as possible to ensure a good data connection when ordering the watch.My app was ready to buy at 08:05, only Apple weren't, so I missed the first batch :/

You could buy from Argos with an estimated 16th delivery.£3.99 p&p but you get 1% back through Quidco.(Until 16th comes and they tell you they're out of stock...)
TBH I can't see Argos getting any in before Apple themselves do. It's the SSSB saga from last year by the looks of things.
