If I get a HMD with 200FOV, 85hz with near zero SDE, near zero blur, near zero godrays or Fresnel rings, wide optical sweat spot all with a 4k render resolution for £402, I’ll be happy.

It's the misinformation coming from Pimax that they're getting grief for... and apologising for.

ArmitageShanks Publish time 2-12-2019 05:24:56

Sounds to me like they're running into bandwidth limitations of a long cable mixed with GPU limitations?

TorTorden Publish time 2-12-2019 05:24:56

Mostly the cable bandwidth and the upscaling chip in the headset itself that struggles to synch at 90, but from the letter they now have stable 82hz, and can mostly get 85hz to run.

So I'm honestly not ruling out full 90hz yet, but yes cable bandwidth might just be the real problem, and until we get HDMI 2.1 GPU's And even that would be at the limit for

As for fps I'd be very surprised if anyone showed a game on rift or vive that doesn't dip below 80fps, before triggering ASW, in some situations so I don't think they have all that much to croon over, seriously even if the 8k 'only' has a render target of 2560*1440 that is nearly 3x times that of either vive or oculus comparing panel to panel.
We are seriously at the limits of cable bandwidths here.

I believe this issue is largely cleared up, and perhaps claiming 90hz was a little optimistic on the kickstarter, but they are really not far from it, if they reach 85hz I will consider it accomplished.

Now I'm back to worrying about black levels, ok those might not be as stellar as the rift, but I choose to remain somewhat optimistic.

Then again, I would actually be rather surprised if even the next architecture (Volta) from Nvidia featured native HDMI 2.1 ports.

Pimax are asking their backers to vote between thumbstick and trackpad. That'll be very interesting!

Think I would vote trackpad. It's only locomotion for which I would prefer the joystick and that's not my VR movement preference. For all else I feel the trackpad is more versatile.

Atmos Publish time 2-12-2019 05:24:57

I’m getting the Valve Knuckles so it’s trackpad for me. I don’t know how Pimax can go for sticks as games are going to be optimised for trackpad.

But it will be interesting to see how the vote goes.

TorTorden Publish time 2-12-2019 05:24:57

Screw sticks, I want more buttons.

Why should 3\5th's of my fingers be delegated to a meere capacitance sensor. I want buttons dammit.

MikeKay1976 Publish time 2-12-2019 05:24:58

They are advertising full oculus support. Now don't get me wrong I think that that is underhand marketing unless they know summat we don't however I would imagine it would be closer to touch if sticks win. I have no dog in this race but personally I hate the steam controller trackpaf

Atmos Publish time 2-12-2019 05:24:58

Looks like Pimax are going to offer both trackpad and sticks.

The Kickstarter is over.

5,946 backers pledged $4,236,618 to help bring this project to life.
