Thats a good point, its the read that matters.

Im just looking through some drives now. Any recommendations?

This looks like the cheapest 3TB at the moment:

I think they were on offer for £110 the other day but missed out.

Does unraid require a system drive other than the usb stick?

MarkE19 Publish time 2-12-2019 04:32:49

No - the full OS runs off the USB flash drive so no HDD space is taken up by it.

Good to know.

Ive been over on the unraid forums but its like another language there. Helpful people im sure but its a bit over my head. I tried to register twice but havn't received a conformation email. does it take a while?

I also did a lot of reading up on unRAID before setting it up on my server. Like you I found most of it going over my head and in reallity learnt far more by actually using it. Now it is set up I find the wiki & forum tend to make a bit more sense.

I can't even remember if I have registered on the forum or not. Be aware that it is a USA site and therefore the time difference could be at least part of the reason for the delay in getting a reply to confirm your registration - also worth checking your spam filter to see if a reply has been blocked.

I guess that once you have installed an OS for your server you are stuck with it until you buy/build a new server to transfer your data to?

saguk1234 Publish time 2-12-2019 04:32:50

Yes you stuck with the OS are but you will quickly find that Unraid is the ultimate server! I have had mine for over a year and I have had no problems with it unlike my RAID server.

Dan201 Publish time 2-12-2019 04:32:50

How can you change OS? Don't they each require a different file system for their data? I.e WHS won't recognise unraid data and will require those drives to be reformatted?

saguk1234 Publish time 2-12-2019 04:32:50

No you are stuck with the OS!

ah, misread your first reply.
