I'm an upgrade as needed kinda guy, currently running a 40" Samsung EU40D5500 which I picked up in 2011 this was an upgrade for my 26" 720p Samsung which I bought in 2001 (for an extortionate amount of money) which is still going strong as the bedroom TV.
So by this reasoning I shouldn't be due to upgrade for 4 more years although with the imminent release of the Xbox One X I'm looking to upgrade to a 55-60" 4K 10bit HDR set around Christmas time. Not got a particular set in mind yet, but will probably be looking at Sammy as they've been good to me in the past.
I still have my 2 Panasonic Plasma THX models. Bought in 2009 only upgrade to OLED when they start giving me problems

Got a Panasonic 50" last January and would upgrade about every 4 to 5 years, However like most of us have a wife not tech savvy and moans the first few days about the size of the screen ( To Big! ). However does not stop her from watching her favourite series and soon becomes accustomed to the new size.
I replaced my defunct 15 year old 22" CRT in 2000 with a Toshiba CRT 32" with built in stereo speakers. The sound was soon put through my hi-fi amplifier. Around 2013 I was given a cheap old surround sound just to see if I liked the tech. Ghosting issues with the CRT convinced me it was time to replace. Easter 2014 saw me invest in some "proper" surround kit. Having missed the first flat screens and the glory of plasma I bought a 55" backlit LCD Panasonic in preparation for the World Cup in Brazil.Serious light bleed issues in four successive examples (thanks to Richer Sounds for their patience) resulted in me getting the 55" Samsung. Seems as if this lasts as well as its predecessors, my next TV will be a roll down screen featuring 8K UHDR!
I splashed out on Samsung KS659000 last year. It cost 3 times my previous TV. No complaints bar the limitations of LED/LCD technology.
I won't be upgrading until OLED reaches its potential and renders LCD obsolete
I upgrade when the tech is too amazing to miss out on.I had the award winning Sony XBR 36" CRT for 8 years because nothing could beat it from a CRT perspective.Then I upgraded it to the Pioneer Kuro 60" 6020 and modified it to make it a Pro for calibration...which up until OLED, could arguably could not be beaten.I have had this Plasma TV for the last 9 years, and ONLY now am I considering the next leap in tech to the LG OLED line of TVs.Motion Blur is a concern for me since the plasma has no trace of that, but once they figure that out...I will switch and hold onto that until something extraordinarily better comes along.

I upgrade when my old TV dies! (and even then I made my last TV- a Samsung LE40hold on a bit longer by soldering in new capacitors!)
I now have a 2015 SONY Android TV 55X8507C.... The reason I bought one of these was because its regularly being updated by SONY.... The picture is great, it has 4K but I'm too stingy to pay for that content! I love the fact that I can get stuff on Torrents and put them on a USB stick to watch them! That is great!...
I did want an LG OLED but at the time the price was ridiculous and they were only curved sets....
