Brisk walk to the shops to buy healthy ingredients, you'll be halfway there data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

Is the gym something you will enjoy doing? It can be quite lonely going to the gym and doing your own thing.
Have you though about classes or find a friend who goes to the gym and partner up with him. Its a lot harder to skip a gym session when someone else is depending on you.
Pretty soon you'll find you'll create your own little world at the gym where anything seems possible.
If the Gym is not for you there are a lot of other ways to get fit.
Join a running club
Start a Martial Art (you're never too old)
Join a rambling/walking club.
Good luck

Thought I'd posted that when I read it back data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7 Seems we're both in a similar position though I don't smoke. I've joined a gym which I will start from Monday but motivation is my biggest downfall so hoping having to go past the gym on the way to work and back will be enough to get me inside. Good luck and do keep us updated.

I’m similar situation 47 this year walk loads though and notice age slowly lol
Stopped smoking 7 weeks ago that’s the first hurdle at our age I reckon
Giving that a while then starting c25k too, if you can crack the smoking you will feel fitter breath easier in on time.
Good luck with it all
