The Chequers Deal
Today the former Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnston, stated that Britain was entering negotiations with Brussels with a “white flag fluttering” and that the Chequers deal amounted to remaining in “the EU taxi; but this time locked in the boot, with absolutely no say on the destination. We won’t have taken back control – we will have lost control".The PM believes the Chequers proposals are the only credible and negotiable plan for Brexit and that Johnston has "no new ideas".Who is right?Are they both correct? 'No new ideas' in Johnson Brexit criticism My personal view is that Brexit must happen - it is what the UK population voted for - and that Chequers probably makes the best of a bad job.In a sense I agree with Johnson's taxi quote - but perhaps that is for the best in the end. Current opinion from the pundits is that it stands no chance of getting through Parliament- and no chance of being agreed by the EU!.....But isn't that the problem when you have a solution that tries to cover all bases but pleases no one?
Back to the plan for a second... If we agree to adopt the EU common rule book after 2019 then we will be tied down to their rules- and court. This will be our mistake, and will restrict the UK in future to trade outside the EU. Basically we are not really leaving.
The divorce settlement is our trump card and should only be paid if we agree on a deal. Does anyone support it apart from Mrs May? Chequers is dead in that form.
I think the only way forward is EFTA/EEA for a period, while we negotiate the future trade deal. I see Jacob Rees-Mogg has said Chequers is the “deadest of dying ducks”. Notwithstanding that his statement doesn't make sense - a dying duck is not yet dead after all - I think Chequers is the best starting platform for further compromise. And in that vein it was good to see May refuse to rule out further concessions today as she pushes ahead with Chequers. EU rejected it, it's dead.No point continuing to discuss it.
I'm just amazed that the proposal even got out of checkers considering the government already knew is contained aspects already outright rejected by the EU.I mean, how incompetent is the government to create something they were told isn't going to fly? Electorate probably against it, EU against it, MPs against it.

Stick a fork in it, it's done. It's only a starting point - grounds from which further compromises can be made on the single market and customs union. The EU have already said they are not willing ti compromise any more - so why continue to flog this particular horse?
