I guess the question is, has anyone stepped up to mount a leadership challenge?Apart from the issue of losing our contribution, have the other 27 members been upset by the UK trying to leave enough to push for a change?

I wonder how flexibile these things are going to be?

If it works from GPS, will it update in real time? Like on a variable speed motorway?

Will you be responsible for paying to update the maps once a year or something to take into account any changes in speed limits?

Hi mate

These systems often include a camera which can read speed signage, more info on what it can do and what current cars already have fitted can be found here: Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) | ETSC

cheers

Mine uses a camera..It does pick up speed signs on the slip roads off of motorways which may cause problems but we don't use the limiter
Don't pay for updates but that could be manufacturer specific

Mine uses a camera too. Probably 80% of the time it works well.

Near me though there’s a dual carriageway, then a roundabout, 1st exit to the left goes to a single carriageway 40mph, straight over the roundabout the DC continues.

99 times out of a 100, when going over the roundabout, it picks up the 40mph sign.

So in theory, I carry straight on, the limiter kicks in and I’m doing 40 in a 70 limit. Now I could override, but are there going to be consequences to overriding? Is it going to be tracked? Do you get warnings if you override so many times in a certain amount of time? Maybe not immediately, but what if insurance companies get access to the data and adjust premiums accordingly? I’d lose out because every day, the black box would record me doing 70 when the limited says I should be doing 40.

I often use the 40mph stretch, it’s only recently changed so my sat nav says it’s still 60, if you come in from one end, there’s a tree that obscures the sign, camera doesn’t pick it up, so if I didn’t know the area and relied solely on the limiter doing its job, just like people now rely solely on their sat nav and don’t actually take as much notice of their surroundings, I could conceivably be doing 60 in a 40.

A bit like bus lane cameras. You stray in to the bus lane for a couple of seconds to avoid a pothole or a cyclist or something, next thing you know, you get a ticket for going into bus lane.

Car sales are going to spike the year before this comes in.

It's going to be hilarious watching a new £ 100k Porsche being overtaken by a ten year old Mondeo. I think it's going to have a massive effect on the car industry. Premium marques especially.

Of course our high speed roads are by far the safest, with the majority of accidents being in town centres and congested areas. Going to be interesting to see how this fits in with smart motorway technology too.

Interesting fact. I was recently 'invited' to go on a course by our local constabulary after doing 68mph on a smart motorway that had just dropped to 60 mph. It was quite interesting as it was entirely focussed on smart motorways. I was told an interesting fact. Since the M42 was upgraded to being a smart motorway there has not been a single fatality on the road. Can't argue with that.

I can't help wondering if Jeremy Clarkson is still going to be so enamoured with the EU after this....

Doubt the insurance companies need access to data to increase premiums but i get your concern and like a lot of other introduced legislation it's likely to be abused..

Lots of hacks will likely appear if it was ever compulsory and none driver optional...

How is the government going to make up for all the lost revenue if nobody is speeding? - an increase in VAT perhaps?
